Pearl S. Buck is my favourite author and recently I had the great honour of visiting her home and resting place at Green Hills Farm, Bucks County. I had picked up this book from there and as such it has a special significance for me.What surprises me is the fact that it's hardly known! For such a fabulous book, it hasn't had much fame. I love The Good Earth but it seems to me that it has over shadowed other equally brilliant books by this great author.
As someone correctly said, it's a gem of a book. It explores the mind of a post war Southern Gentleman, Pierce Delaney, who clings to the security and old world charm of the days gone by but is perceptive enough to know that things have changed and he has not allowed himself to change with them. A good man to the core - intelligent, loving, devoted and strong, yet perhaps not strong enough. His brother Tom Delaney on the other hand fought for the North and kept up his fight by marrying the woman of his choice and breaking all old world shackles to move on in a life of his own creation, utterly at peace with himself and prepared for the future and change which must come.
The past is represented in the form of Lucinda Delaney, Pierce's wife, the war was fought and won by the other side but she sees that as no concern of hers, she must have new satin for her upholstery.
What captivates the reader is the richness of the narration, the clear articulation of the vague thoughts which crowd a human mind, despite all the subjects it touches upon, it is not a melancholy book, on the contrary it's full of the good things in life and paints a vivid picture of beauty. This thin book covers almost three decades of a man's life and is quite complete in itself. It is a book of hope, of comfort, courage and change.

Pearl S. Buck is one of my favorite authors! Doesn't matter what the background of the novel is, I find that she understands the people and characters very well in her depiction and description. This one is a little different from her "typical" novels, it showed me a better understanding of the South and "southern thinking" and went beyond the stereotypical racial issues of the times. In fact this book is timeless in how it portrays racial differences in culture and attitudes. I'm glad I spent time reading this!
Another enjoyable read by Pearl S. Buck. This novel breaks away from her Asian settings with a journey through the freeing of slaves after the Civil War. An engaging story that touches on the struggles faced by slave owners and their freed slaves to deal with a different way of life. It captures the emotions of the various characters as they make their way through new challenges.
I enjoyed this book. It gave me some insight into the life and mentality of Southerners after the Civil War was fought. Even though Abraham Lincoln had emancipated the slaves, it did not necessarily mean that the people's feelings about slavery and black people instantly changed (as evidenced by history) . Although I thought Pierce was a good person because he stood by his marriage, I felt Tom was stronger to stand by his convictions and act according to his beliefs. This book was thought provoking and a good read.
She captures individual character quirks and nuances quite well. Her understanding of the people of the area and how they came to terms with the change in their lifestyle after such a devisive war was very insightful. The area she missed can easily be ascribed to her Era and cultural filters such as characterizing most freed slaves as not wanting to change their dependency upon their old masters. Only those of mixed races who had been given a relationship held apart from the common slave, educated and who presented lighter skin were perceived as more equal and who chafed under Jim Crow.
A different view of the old south and it's traditions. Miss Buck shows us a Yankees view of how the south kept as much as possible to the old ways after the war against the north. As a Southern myself, I find it a fascinating point of view. Once I started the book I found it hard to put down. If you are a lover of historical fiction, you will love this book. It is typical " Pearl. S. Buck. " Well written. A planter returns to his wife and children. His home has somehow survived the burning destruction of the South. His only thoughts are of peace and returning back to the way things were before the war. Good reading. Good plot. Pearl S. Buck will always keep you entertained!!!
Buck's writing is always good, but this is not my favorite of her works. Nevertheless, it is an insightful treatment of the changing post civil war South. The individual characters are well developed and reveal the various aspects of social change. It is a good read and a very honest look back into the antebellum mind and lifestyle, as well as the reactions against these constraints. There are many depths to plumb in observing and analyzing different characters and this would be an excellent choice for book club discussions.
Ms. Buck spent her first 40 years in China (daughter of missionaries) and therefore knows and writes best about that. She does, however, know much about the Civil War and its aftermath. The recurring theme is, why did we fight? Nothing in the South changed, even though it lost. The white superiority and black inferiority continued unchanged, the only difference being that the slaves were now paid and their “owners” were no longer referred to as “masters” and “mistresses.” Anyone who dared to disagree, and consider blacks and whites as equals, was ostracized and forced to move North.
The “angry wife” referred to in the title spent her life angry because she wanted, but couldn’t, live in the past. Pierce, the main character, knew that the War did nothing to change the racial problems and often proclaimed his gladness that he’d not be alive to witness its escalation.
